I think they can be. I was watching a Michael Wesch lecture today about how he uses wikis with his students (link in this blogpost). Not the same as for me at a school but he likes the wiki as an aggregator and creation-hub of notes for everybody. You might like to try this: http://educationalwikis.wikispaces.com/Classroom+Wikis for some ideas. Depends on the age group as to how you might use it. Once you learn how to make wikis they are easy to use and good fun. Harder to assess individuals contributions in a summative way but easy to let your students encourage each other. Certainly needs a lot of guidance through the setting up process. Make sure you give them something really meaty to get their teeth into as the first attempt so they are not short of content. Then lots of praise for all contributions - not just the smart guys doing the usual but in a new way. Also, they are a great tool for bringing multimedia together to make a rich resource.

Hope this helps.

Would love to know how you get on.

Dai

I am in an educational technology grad class and one of the technologies we are looking at is wikis and using wikis and the ability to post to wikis as a instructional tool. My concern with this is that wikis would end up being more time consuming than useful. Do you think that wikis are useful in an educational setting and why?

This week's agenda:

1. Doug's interview technique - using Twitter and phenomenal response - other ideas on how it could use in similar situation? (Doug)

2. Other ways of presenting - e.g. Alan Levine's use of 'CoolIris' (another example of this method by Dean Shareski here) You'll need the CoolIris plugin to get these to work properly! (Doug)

3. I read Robert Jones blog post a few weeks ago on the concept of 'My Web is better'. To explain his web it is a tailor made solution where on one page he can "pretty much all the new stuff from all the sites that interest me to a single page set up to make it very easy for me to see at a glance what is new"...."My Web connects me to a huge network of educators "..."My Web provides me with free office tools that I can access on any connected device"..."My Web lets me create my own rich web applications and host them free online "....
o What I'd like to discuss is
+ What does your web look like for you?
+ What does/or could 'My Web' look like for the pupils you teach? How can this be integrated into the curriculum?
+ What could 'My Web' look like for other teachers? (Krysia)

4. Guardian article on leaked reforms to primary curriculum and expectations that all pupils will understand blogs, podcasts, Twitter and Wikipedia by end of Yr6

5. Not to speak specifically but reminder all welcome to join wiki on Copyright, IPR,Licensing, Open Educational resources at http://copyright4learning.wetpaint.com/

This week's agenda:

1. Covering your back - disclaimers for audio and video recordings (for pupils, staff & guests). Necessary? Pro forma? Realistic threat? Use of Creative Commons licenses could be very useful. Wiki for guidance being developed by Mark & Theo at: http://copyright4learning.wetpaint.com/
2. 'Functional Skills' in ICT - what are they according to the government and what should they be?
3. Is this 'game-changing' wearable technology the future or just daft? TED Talks: Pattie Maes
4. How can technology turn a classroom into an exciting learning environment?

My previous posts deserve a follow up and I really enjoyed tonight's meeting. Finally broke my duck and spoke (having turned the camera on for the first time a fortnight ago). Lots of relevant topics covered and good ideas kicked about. More ideas already for next week's agenda.

This week's agenda:

1. Does this kind of video help further education technology?
2. Indispensible Tools wiki - A vast list of ed tech tools collated by Drew Buddie (@digitalmaverick)
3. This article raises excellent issues for ed tech, especially learning platforms, but I think there is an undeclared commercial interest for an application that feeds related media into a word processor based on the topic you are typing about. However, still warrants discussion.
4. ETRU Special for new teachers. Let's send messages out to our networks inviting new educators to join a meeting where they set the agenda. Need a date? Or would it be better to guage response and then set a date? Maybe we could each invite a teacher that we know?
5. Fantastic screencast of use of GForms and SSheets, especially for schools using GApps (obviously).
6. RocketScience - a short rant
7. We've started to look at the next round of hardware purchases and it looks like we're going to make a large investment in netbooks. What are people using out there already? What's good and what's bad in the netbook world? And what's on the horizon?
8. Would like to discuss copyright issues - complex rules and lots of grey areas. Good copyright presentation file here. Closely related to the above Creative Commons and OER (Open Educational Resources)
9. Perhaps a quick section on recommended iPhone/Android/BlackBerry apps for education? I've been using AirMouse with my iPhone and Interactive Whiteboard for the last few weeks. Works really well with Google Earth and allows you to be at the back of the classroom to see what the students see! :-)

Minutes of meeting available here 8)

Hi Mark

If you remember on Sunday, as part of our growth dialogue, we discussed the idea of doing a newbies flashmeet one Sunday. I think this was a symptom of what you're referring to. Lot's of us work with teachers trying ed tech out for the first time or who lack confidence using it in the classroom. We are all interested in focussing on the application of tech tools in education.

ETRU has to strike a balance between talking to like-minded people about what we're doing in school and the inevitable tide of our developing friendships wrapped up with teachmeets and more.

It's always great to see a new face and well done for speaking up. As Doug said, add an agenda item if there's anything you'd like to discuss.

This is a good idea. We could aggregate links and our RSSs. Not used pageflakes but netvibes is similar and really good tool. Have you started it Doug? Maybe a danger of spreading too thin, too many pies for a visitor to reckon with; equally this is just displaying the tools we use in class. I'm for giving it a go.

I've recently moved the podcast hosting site from Windows Live Skydrive to http://archive.org. Hmmm...

Cheers Doug,

There's no need to apologise - the group is what it is. And I'm aware that it's a very open group and so I have some responsibility to try to shape the group if I want to get the most out of it. I'm planning on inviting kids into the new WPMU blog this week so I may have something useful to talk about - we'll have to wait and see...

Mark,

Thanks for your input - this is exactly what this forum is for! :D

Apologies on behalf of the group if the last couple of weeks have been off-putting. We've been going through some growth issues - as you may have gathered! I'm sure that they've largely been put to bed now, though, and we can get back on track talking about the application of educational technology.

Why not add something to the agenda for next week to make sure we keep on track?

Tags? - they were default - I didn't add them... turned them off now.

Yes all the RSS feeds in one place so people can quickly go and have a look - I'd find that easier just for a quick scan.

You mean in addition, to pull all the RSS feeds into? Hmmm... what do others think?

Oh, and you need to put comma in between the tags, Leon. I made the same mistake! 8O

A few thoughts that occurred to me tonight as a veteran of 3 meetings (starting with the WPMU special):

Tonight's meeting especially, and last week's also, left me a little disillusioned with the flashmeeting, which is a shame as I think it has a massive amount of potential to do what *I* want. The first meeting I attended was all about using WPMU - why blogging is a useful tool, why various other platforms are suitable in different ways, how to go about setting up a productive site, etc. - very practical.

The following two meetings featured much more discussion of organisational issues and things like TeachMeet - which seems to be quite cliquey. I'm sure that for those involved they don't seem that way, but from where I sit they do (rightly or wrongly). I'm not saying that nobody should be allowed to talk about events, especially when so many of those involved in ETRU attend, it just makes it difficult for me to engage. I'm not likely to be able to attend any of these events in the foreseeable future and I suspect most teachers are in a similar position.

What I'm trying to say is that I was really hoping for a weekly meeting with teachers wanting to use technology in the classroom (I really don't understand what all the fuss was over terminology in the chat window about that - it's where I spend a significant proportion of my professional life) and suggesting useful sites, tools, software and practical advice. I suspect this was (and still is!) ETRU's original aim.

Now I have no right to come in and criticise a group and to tell them that they are doing it 'wrong'. I just hope that an outsider's perspective is useful (and not too offensive). I'll certainly be sticking around - this is why I joined Twitter this year, started reading educational and pupil blogs several years ago and so on. Maybe I should turn the mic on as well as the webcam next week and start asking some more questions, offering up some more ideas/experience of my own.

I genuinely hope I haven't offended. And I'll see you [s]off[/s] all next week. [Edit: Freudian slip?]

Time to dig out the asbestos underpants methinks - not worn those since the days of Usenet...
